about

Producer Comments:
This project came about when I found myself feeling the need to bring new energy into my work. I had completed 4 solo artist releases and became restless with my process. I wanted to reinvent how I was approaching composition.

I started discussions with Gary Craig, drums, about crafting grooves to work with. Gary assembled exceptional rhythm bundles, including in them everything I'd need to arrange pieces. I used those to compose to – the first point of stepping away from any ingrained rhythmic tendencies. In some cases, on this set list, you’ll hear the same groove being used on back-to-back tracks. There’s a consistency to this, an energy level held. Having Gary on this project gave me the confidence to proceed and the inspiration to continue.

Once I had ideas to fan out, Mitch Starkman, bass, became the next contributor. As a producer – this is where I hear the depth and expansiveness of the work - where I know what I'm building. It is a delight to really dig into his performances on this collection. He's a wonderful musician, collaborator & overall consultant.

Two exceptional guitar players contributed to these recordings. I’m very fortunate and honoured to be taught by and to play with both:

Brian May contributes his element of free-abandon energy. A friend for decades, having played on my first album release in 1996 – this is a meaningful collaboration. His performances on this record are what drives me to choose ‘rock’ as one of many genres. There are several truly soaring moments on these recordings from Brian.

Bob McAlpine - It feels super special to send very basic key arrangements to Gowan’s career-long guitar player to work up his tracks (not!). Bob is an expert composer and collaborator, his contributions are beautiful, thoughtful and precise - an amazing player and writer.

There are also some special guests joining in:

While I was producing this project, David Quinton was busy recording his new album here at Village Works – many sessions, many hangs and discussions about the world. It seemed like such a great opportunity to invite him to play drums on Figments. I love how his energy produced a different feel from the band.

It's all an exchange of energy. Creating with a group of musicians is exploring and establishing the energy of that group. My process is to fan out simplistic arrangements, what you'd capture on a lead sheet - and to finalize my keys, pianos and vocals once everyone is in - I often mute my original parts at this stage and start building from this new place. That's where my creativity awoke to a very good home. That's where the influences of these great musicians imprinted on my work. That's also where this becomes an equal collaboration, full circle. I'm extending a humbled and tremendously appreciative hats off to this group - for their collaboration & contributions. A big thanks as well, for the continued inspiration.

Very special guests include:
Ron Parker - Trombone on The Dreaming Light
Ira Zingraff - Trumpet on The Dreaming Light
Laura Disenhaus – Flute on Star Men
Anton Evans - Background Vocals on Star Men

Thank you so much for playing with us!

Lastly, this record’s final sonic design came from two talented sound wizards:
Anton Evans, Final Mix Mixing Engineer
Erman Aydöner, Mastering Engineer

I'm most grateful to them!
